Remember Easter?
Yeah. I'm not so great at getting photos up in a timely manner. But you are getting Easter pics right in time for Halloween!
After church we went to Grandma and Grandpa's house because a.) fabulous yard and b.) fabulous wine selection.
Not gonna lie.
So the kids hunted for eggs filled with coins and chocolate covered...raisins?
We crazy like that.
And then there was time for a romp in the sprinklers.
And playing with balloons.
And playing corn toss.
And jumping off the corn toss boxes.
And napping in the sunshine.
And drinking wine. Of course.
And surreptitiously photographing my dad and brother-in-law.
And hanging out with my two awesome seesters.

Annual Adoption Picnic
Every year our adoption agency hosts a huge picnic. Adoptive families come, birth families come, even friends of either side come. Bounce houses, grilling, a clown, and lots of chasing of children provide entertainment. This year we went with Sadie's birth father and his parents - her Nana and Tata. Sarah, our fabulous adoption facilitator (she helped with three of our kids), is in the pink shirt.
Sadie and Benjamin were first in line to get painted by the clown.
Benjamin told the clown that he wanted to be "gold." What? "Just gold." The clown, who had already made fun of Sadie Eloise's name (I know, right?), acted like he was a real weirdo. That's OK...we can deal with a cranky clown.
I'm pretty sure I know what happened. Our boy who likes shiny things and sequins probably thoroughly looked over the paint kit and decided that nothing looked more fun than that glittery pot of gold. He's no fool. He asks for what he wants, even though he marches entirely to the beat of his own drum. (I pray he never loses that innocence, but I also ache for what challenges that might bring in today's world.)
Oh, Bella. Sitting on a serape.
Oh, Oli. Playing with your lei.
So then the clown started her show. For being such a cranky pants, she was pretty darn funny.
And here are my kids. The only ones who get up and run toward the front when she asks for a volunteer. They are having so much fun they can't contain themselves. I really should teach them to sit down.
Poor Oli was sick and spent a lot of time lying on Papa. And while this was going on, Sadie had the urgent need to pee. In the middle of a huge crowd in a huger park, girlfriend just kicked off her panties, hiked up her dress, squatted and did her thang. Free Range Kiddos are big time awesome, even when they are embarrassing.
We'll end with The Papa and his sense of humor. Sitting on hot coals was all his idea.

Grandma & Grandpa V's Visit in April
A couple of months ago, Grandma and Grandpa V (Benjamin's biological grandparents) stopped in for a day. They had driven west (from upstate New York) to visit some friends in Arizona and decided to come see us, too. So fun!
It was Grandpa's V's wish to stick his toes in the Pacific Ocean, so we made sure that could happen.
Benj and Sadie are finally old enough to just LOVE the ocean. They kept running in and out of the waves until their teeth were chattering, and Sadie's lips turned a purplish hue.
The V grandparents are so dear to us - they have seven grandchildren back in NY, and yet they continue to "adopt" our additional kids as their grand kids as well. Such big hearts.
Benj just saw me editing these photos and asked if I could print one out for his room.
Oli is not much one for cold water, so he opted for throwing sand and filling pails.
And we'll end with this shot - it's just so pretty.

Catching Up - dem Clevelanders visit
Back in February, mere days after Oliver and Isabella joined the family, Brent's mom (Gramma Doro), sister (Aunt Amy) and niece, Morgan, arrived for a visit that had been planned a long time earlier. Oh, they were so gracious.
With the doubling of kiddos and the lack of sleep we were getting, I totally failed in the hospitality department, but they never complained. Mom even made dinners for us.
One lovely afternoon we sat and drank margaritas in the backyard while the kids turned a few items into a water slide. First climb up...
then slide down. They took turns sliding and holding the hose.
Oli preferred to watch - except when he was crawling through the secret escape hatch in the castle.
Love those sunny afternoons.
We were so grateful to have their help during the chaos of that first week. I'm not sure their vacation was restful, but it was generous and appreciated.

THIS is open adoption.
We have now celebrated sweet Sadie's birthday three times. This year it occurred to me that the cake is the perfect symbol for open adoption. We did not plan ahead, and yet here is how it worked out:
Year 1 - Nana, Sadie's biological grandma, brought the cake for the party. She took a photo that she loved of our dear girl and had a cake made with her picture on it.
Year 2 - Grandma, my mom, made the requested pink cake with pink frosting.
Year 3 - Gramma Doro, Brent's mom, was in town for Sadie's birthday. And this year she made the cake...again by request, a pink cake with pink frosting.
THIS is open adoption - that a little girl can have birthday after birthday, and everyone gets a chance to bring the cake.
