On a Saturday in mid-August, I spoke to a group of about 60 women at an event put on my mom's church. Here's how I got roped into this (and loved every minute of it!)
My mom called me one afternoon and said, "The women's ministry is planning a luncheon in my backyard, and I was thinking you might be a good speaker for it. If you were to consider this, what would you be likely to talk about?" Or something like that.
"Funny you should ask," I basically said. "I've really been reflecting on our adoption journey and the spiritual lessons surrounding it. I've been thinking a lot about parenting, too, and trying to formulate some of the things I have discovered about our approach as parents to discipline, training our children, and relating to the world as a family."
"Well, why don't you pray about it and think on it and get back to me," she said.
So that's how it went. God was placing things on my heart, or at least prompting me to reflect on and find words for what's been banging around in my head, and he was guiding my mom to think of me as a potential speaker.
This is all very funny to me because I am very comfortable teaching many other things in many other circumstances, but when it comes to anything having to do with the Bible, I feel very ill-equipped. I feel like I don't really know what I think I know. I have no authority to speak on the Bible because I have not been trained in it, because most of what I know I learned a long time ago and have not studied recently with the intention of teaching.
A friend reminded me that it doesn't matter - I have the story of my life and how God has been a part of it. Biblical truth has been revealed in the details of my story. I am not attempting to speak for God, but rather to point to him through what he has done in my life. OK, I thought. I can do that.
For about six weeks, whenever I had spare time, I would read the stories of the barren women in the Bible, almost of of whom eventually bore children. All these stories were not about the healing of the women, but rather the glorification of God that came after the wait and the longing. Their stories, and mine, are not about how God made our lives better, but rather how we had the privilege of accompanying God in the work he was doing.
In my case, I am not mothering children who will one day be the lineage of Christ. But I am an answer to more than a few people's prayers for Benjamin and Sadie. (An imperfect and flawed answer, but a faithful one.) When all the strands of my little family are examined, there are some beautiful revelations indeed.
So I called this conversation "From Barrenness to Restoration." I have never given birth, but I became a mother. And I am getting to play a role in the healing of all the hearts involved - the birthparents, the biological families, in particular the grandparents, and eventually, to Benjamin and Sadie. It is my hope that through open adoption they will never imagine rejection or a lack of love, but if their teenage minds conjure up some angst about it, I have the privilege of helping them navigate out of that turmoil. I also have the privilege of giving them the space they could need with their biological families if that should help. My guess, however, is that with all this love and support my kiddos won't have a hole in their hearts.
One day I will post the text - or perhaps it will make a good feature for a magazine. I continue to think of things to adjust, emphasize, or delete, so I want to take the time to refine it. In the meantime, if you need a speaker on adoption, mothering, or parenting, you know how to reach me.

Curb Your Horse

You probably know already that The Papa likes to bike. He rides several times a week, both on the road and cross country. Here's a shot of him taking on a hill...without putting a foot down:

This passion has led to a few things...first, he wrote an article for a city magazine about mountain biking in the area. He organized a photo shoot for one of the rides. I edited his work and together we put out a shiny piece. We'll let you know if there is a way to link to it online once it has been published.
The other thing is the creation of a biking club called CurbYourHorse.
The Papa and his buddies set up rides and meet other cyclists on the trails. A number of invitations to ride later, his little group has become quite large. A logo was designed and a web site needed to be created.
Well, this week I helped create the web site (thanks, iWeb!) We are still working out the kinks of the subscription feed (no thanks, iWeb!), but other than that, it's ready to go.

Best Friend?
So we were reading a new book today, and in it the question is asked: Do you have a best friend?
I asked Benjamin, so who is your best friend? Here is what he said:
"Yes! My best friend is named Bloomi. He lives in Africa. He's African."

It was hot yesterday...
It started out innocently enough. A kiddie pool and some water. A pair of bare buns.
Bright Eyes is enthralled with her brother.
He IS quite entertaining.
He is also a wave machine unto himself.
I don't even know WHAT to say about this photo.
A blow-up pool does not a good teether make...
But this face! Oh this face! Too much cuteness in one place.

Sit, Stand, Run
So as I write this next update, let us recall...Sadie is not yet six months old. She will be in three days, but nevermind.
Girlfriend is sitting up. By herself. As of two days ago. Seriously.
But that's not as nutty as the next announcement.
She's crawling. This is no longer beginner crawling, the slow and lurching sort. No. She is full on, moving all appendages, traveling from one room to the next, crawling. Running can't be far away with this child.
**Video footage to come soon!

A Few Favorite Cabin Shots
In my early childhood, my parents built a cabin. They chose a little village in a grove of Aspen trees high in the mountains of the Eastern Sierra Nevadas. Many of my best memories take place up there.
We are now creating memories with our own children. At the end of July, we made the six-hour drive and stayed for a few days with Gramma and Grandpa, and Auntie Bek and Uncle Mike.
Nature hikes and fishing kept us busy, as well as some cabin chores like hauling, splitting, and stacking wood for burning in the stove over the winter.
Worms were particularly fun. Benjamin ate one and declared that it tasted "icky."
Thanks to Gramma and Grandpa for the newest upgrades - that beautiful wrap-around deck.
Auntie Bek and Uncle Mike are a lot of fun, even if they are tough to beat in Settlers of Catan.
More photos to come...I'm working on a slideshow and video combo. Whew!

Benjamin's Idea
Mama: Benjamin, I was thinking it might be fun to go on a hike today.
LP: Yeah!!! Let's go for a hike!
Mama: Shall we go to Felicita Park with the dog?
LP: Yeah! That sounds like fun!
A few minutes later...
LP: But, Mama? I was thinking it would be fun to go to the beach.
Mama: Oh, yeah? That sounds like a great idea!
LP: I want to walk by the ocean.
Mama: OK, that sounds lovely. Shall we take a picnic lunch?
LP: Ooooooh, yes! I LOVE a picnic!
And so we did.
And on the way home...
Mama: That was a great idea, Benjamin. Thank you for suggesting the beach. I had a so much fun with you.
LP: Yeah...I have a lot of great ideas.

Grandma's Favorite (x2)
So Nana (Sadie's biological grandma) has two little girls to shower her love upon (and a baby on the way!) - of course her heart has room for TWO favorites! These cute little pink shirts both claim "Grandma's favorite", and we had to get a photo of them together.
Of course getting two little munchkins looking in the same direction is never easy.
And here's Miss Sadie resting her bright eyes in Nana's embrace.

Lovely Saturday Morning
It's Saturday morning. The Papa went mountain biking at the lake, early, like around 6:00. That left me with Kid Sunshine and Bright Eyes. It is not unusual for me to spend the morning alone with the children - it's what I do Monday through Friday. But for some reason, Saturday mornings are simply full of peace.
I must put pressure on myself during the week to get things done. I do believe the need for haste germinates in my mind. Weekend mornings can be sweet and lazy, and that's acceptable. I wish every morning could be this tender.
So we begin with watching an episode of Sesame Street and eating Cheerios. Sadie has been rolling around on the rug, trying to keep up with Benjamin's antics and gnawing on everything. Sandra McCracken provides our soundtrack, as morning sunlight peeps through the shades. It is cool, a welcome change from the heat of the past weeks.
I pick up Sadie to feed her, snuggling her close. For a girl whose primary goal is to get to some other destination, her moments of sinking into an embrace are limited to feedings and tired moments. I cherish them.
Benjamin crawls into a fleece blanket and wraps himself up.
"Mama," he calls out. "Mama, look! I'm a snake."
"Wow. Are you hissing?"
"No. I'm shedding my skin," he says as he wiggles and slithers out of the blanket.
A few minutes pass. The rocking chair is overturned by a pair of busy hands. This boy climbs onto the back of it.
"Is that a rocket ship or are you sailing the ocean?" I ask.
"It's a wocket ship!" he exclaims.
There is much movement, some climbing on and off, and then...
"Mama! I landed on the moon! I'm going to get out and walk on the moon!"
Hot coffee and cream for me, some sliced apples for the boy. Sadie lies down for her morning nap, and The Papa returns home. The sun is now bright, and it is time to carry on with the day. I am so very grateful for this blessed morning.
