His Calling

While buffing the paint on the new-old Falcon with Little P...

Papa: I think I've found my calling in life.

Mama: What...restoring old cars?

Papa: Being a father.

The New Addition

This, are you paying attention? THIS is a 1964 Ford Falcon Sprint, and it is the newest member of The P-Pod. The Papa picked it up for a steal, or perhaps, for a very good deal...nonetheless, it is a project car that The Papa envisions working on with his son until The Son is able to drive. Such are the sentiments of a sentimental man who grew up working on cool cars with his father.

The work commences...Little P must get everything on his face at some point.

Buffing the paint, hoping to breathe new life into it.

Little P is very attentive to what Papa does and how he does it.

This proud boy gets to hang out and help his Papa, and boy, does he love it!

Injuries

This week was a doozy. Little P must be going through a growth spurt or something because he has been clumsy as all get-out: opening doors that snag his toes, tripping as he runs and falling on his face, losing his balance while sitting on a picnic bench and landing on his back.

But some of the injuries sustained this week were random accidents or perhaps, ahem, a little misbehavior. The list:

1. Grabbing a hot curling iron in Mama's bathroom. A large blister ensued.

2. Taking dirt out of a broken pot in order to throw it and cutting his thumb.

3. Falling face-first onto the edge of a brick planter box while playing.

4. Stepping on a bee and getting stung.

Holy moly. Let's hope next week is a little easier on the body.

Yes.

Yes, he likes to play coy and not look at the camera.

Yes, he has a scratch on his cheek and ear from falling onto a brick planter box.

Yes, he is a clown.

Yes, he got a blister from grabbing a hot curling iron. And then it popped. And now it's crusty.

Yes, he refuses to sit still for the camera.

Yes, he is wearing red polish on his big toenails.

Yes, he is happy and carefree.

Yes, he talks. A lot.

Yes, he does try to jump off chairs.

Yes, he is adored.

A Conversation of Sorts

LP: What's Benjamin doing? *rolling around on his back with his feet in the air, holding a toy car ramp on his soles*

Mama: I don't know, what IS Benjamin doing?

LP: I'm rolling around.

Mama: Oh. You're rolling around.

LP: Yeah, I'm rolling around, too.

(pause)

LP: Oh! My sockies! *lying on his back looking at a pair of socks on the floor* Na, na, na, na, na, na, na...

(pause)

LP: *finding a sticker attached to the sock* I gonna eat that.

Mama: No, don't eat that.

*LP gets up to ride his scooter*

LP: I gonna bite my scooter.

Mama: Do you think that's a good idea?

LP: Nooooooooooooo.

*finds his Matchbox car*

LP: Whoa! It's a Mustang coupe! Look, Mama. The hood. See that? That part is the hood. There's a engine under there. Look, Mama. There's a engine. *flicking the hood open and closed*

(pause)

LP: Ready? *sends car down ramp...more playing sounds are heard*

CRASH followed by much whining and leaning on Mama's chair. More whining.

Mama: What's wrong? Can you use your words? I don't understand whining.

*non-descript whining continues*

Mama: I'm sorry, I can't understand. You'll have to tell me in words.

LP: I hurt myself.

Mama: Oh, how sad. Do you need a kiss on your hand or on your cheek?

LP: No kiss! *he walks off to find something else to do*

(pause)

LP: Oh, my race cars are downstairs.

(pause) *more flicking of the hood open and closed*

LP: Bye-bye, Mama. I going downstairs.

I love teaching this kid

Yes. I just love teaching this kid. Maybe all kids at this age are this way. If that's the case, parenting very much has things to look forward to as we add to our family.

The latest thing learned was been the sound of a harmonica. Why? Oh, I don't know. Because one day Bob Dylan entered the Ipod mix that being played in the car and I thought, "A harmonica has a very unique sound. I'd like Benjamin to be able to identify the sounds of different instruments. What an easy one to start with."

Or something like that.

So while we listen to Bob Dylan songs, we talk about how that particular sound belongs to the harmonica (which he has not yet seen, mind you.)

Just now, as in two minutes ago, as I sat sewing, I heard him in the other room. We are listening to Van Morrison. A harmonica did its thing as part of a song and I heard, in his sweetest little sing-songy voice, "That's a harmonica."

Oh, be still my heart. He makes me smile.

50 cents and 5 minutes

Mama's been sewing, you see. And of course our young hero wants to be in the middle of whatever a mama is doing. So one day I took five minutes to make a few beanbags for Benjamin and Amal, and they were a hit.

The day they were made, the boys played with them on and off for the entire hour before dinner time and much of the hour after. Throwing them into an empty trashcan, taking them out again. And just today, in fact, Benjamin asked me to "play bean bag" with him.

It's cool that so much fun can still be had with something that only cost 50 cents and 5 minutes of time.
