Catching Up - DISNEYLAND

For Benjamin's 6th birthday, we decided to take him to Disneyland...just Mama, Papa, and the boy. Grandma and Grandpa bought us tickets, and we set off on our adventure.  Our first ride was in Adventureland - the Jungle Cruise, complete with bathing elephants, bands of naughty baboons, and renegade hippos (how true are these elements!).  Benjamin pretty much looked like this photo the entire time:

We also visited Tom Sawyer's Island and pirate hideout. Super fun to run around.

Wondering where to find Sacajawea's remains?

As we headed to another part of the park, the music from this little production captured our attention. He was mesmerized - snapped out only by the confetti that dropped from the ceiling at the end of the show.

We rode both the Matterhorn (where he sat ALONE in the front seat - this is a big deal - and he did not freak out), the bobsled roller coaster that runs through the mountain, and the monorail, pictured below. He really wanted to ride the monorail. It's like a modern train.

The cars were big fun. He took turns driving with Papa.

At the Paduan Training show, he arrived too late to actually participate, but he was enthralled by it all.

See?

We did buy him a blaster after exiting the Star Tours ride. Mighty proud of it, he was. In fact, he ran through the crowd jumping and crouching and shooting at people as if he were really under fire.

Vader and his goons prepare to exit.

You can hardly see it, but that is the Disney castle behind us. We also got to eat churros, dine at some fun restaurants, watch a parade, tour Sleeping Beauty's castle, ride the carousel, and more.  He was pretty happy about the whole thing. And merely five minutes after fighting us about putting on his jammies for the ride home, he fell asleep.

Catching up - Benjamin Turns 6!

For Benjamin's birthday this year we kept things small and simple. It gets a little harder to figure out birthdays at this stage. We could easily have 50 people if we invited all my family with kids, all the grandparents, all the church play group friends, and his entire class at school...knowing that even then only a few of them would show up. This is the age where birthdays are still a family affair - his buddies bring parents and siblings. It's awesome...except we wanted to do something small this year because the REAL celebration was taking him to Disneyland. Oh, heavenly mice. That would be a treat.

So we only invited immediate family and two buddies from school. That made it a really intimate party, but it was great. Benjamin requested a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and chocolate ice cream. I went with the Pioneer Woman's sheet cake (insanely delicious - never had a chocolate sheet cake that good in my life). He had also wanted a sort of dragster theme, so we had a few decorations. Nothing Pinterest worthy, but the plan was SIMPLE. Benjamin helped decorate the cake.

His friends must have known he was into cars because that is what he got for presents. We didn't even have a theme-y invitation!  Just an email to the parents!

So he blew out the candles and we all cheered.

Festivities included the men acting like real...

men...

And a table for the kiddos to hang out.

Later in the day I found this in his room.

That's right. He's sleeping in a box. And he stayed in it all night.

Catching Up - January

In January, our dress-up selection improved in part due to fantastic Christmas gifts.

And Sadie continues to dazzle us with her fantastic teeth. Speaking of teeth, I think this was the month when Benjamin lost his first tooth. And I think there is a cell phone photo of the gap in his mouth somewhere - not on my computer, obviously.  He lost it in his sleep. We never found it.

The trampoline that they received at Christmas got much use. They are already bored of it now that we are in the month of April. But in January, along with a little Fatboy Slim, it was tremendous fun.

I took some photos of the kids' ministry at church. Here's Benj and one of his good buddies.

We moved Benjamin into the room formerly used by Tati when she lived with us. In order to prepare it for the racing theme, I painted a yellow stripe on the wall. Here is the before photo. There is still one more task to do in there, and then I will take some after photos.

Catching Up - New Year's Fun

After Christmas we headed to the Eastern Sierras for a little cabin time. Big snow. Big fun.

Some friends joined us a few days in. As I uploaded these photos in no particular order, I will now have to tell you about the trip in no particular order. So let's start with these - there was plenty of hot "chocwet."

Papa decided that we all needed to learn chess, so we did a bit of that. I heard there's a kids' chess club at our public library - I am thinking that Benjamin should start going next year.

Here's what happens when I try to get a beautiful shot of these two:

A.   TI.    TOOOOOOOOD.

Seriously. This is the only one (out of a dozen) that had them both smiling:

This is Julie photographing her kiddos with Sadie. I have included some of her photos in this post because she got some really great shots.

Oh, Sadie Lou. Too cute all the time.

Having a couple of older kids around was really nice. They could read books to our kids...

The cabin has been updated in recent years. We love the wrap around deck:

We did some hiking - it was actually quite warm some days.

And snowball-making. It must be done.

My favorite - sledding. And I think Julie got the best shot of Sadie in her element.
